Beginner's Guide to Sailing on Lake Fairview

By Cynthia Johnson·
Beginner sailors on Lake Fairview with an instructor

Lake Fairview is one of Orlando's best-kept secrets for water sports enthusiasts. At 405 acres, the spring-fed lake offers plenty of room to practice sailing maneuvers without feeling confined. The water is cleaner than most Florida lakes, and the tree-lined shores create comfortable wind conditions for beginners who are still building confidence.

Before your first lesson, there are a few things worth knowing. First, wear comfortable clothes you don't mind getting wet — sailing involves movement, and on warm days in Florida, a splash of lake water is welcome. Closed-toe shoes are recommended for grip on deck. Sunscreen is essential, especially on the water where UV reflects off the surface.

Our ASA 101 course runs approximately 15 hours over multiple sessions. You'll spend time both on land learning theory and on the water applying it. Our Com-Pac 16 and Com-Pac 23 sailboats are stable, forgiving vessels that are ideal for new sailors. Your instructor will be with you every step of the way.

What will you actually learn? The course covers basic sailing terminology, how sails generate power, steering techniques, tacking and jibing, docking, and essential safety procedures. By the end, you'll have the skills and confidence to sail a small keelboat independently — and you'll have your ASA 101 certification to prove it.

If you're curious about sailing but not sure if it's for you, come by the marina and watch a lesson in progress. We're happy to answer questions before you commit. The lake is beautiful, the sport is rewarding, and our instructors are patient with people of all ages and backgrounds.
